When Augustus and Isaac play the video game, Augustus always decides to try and save the civilians. Even though this causes him to lose the game he always does it anyways. This shows that he really cares about people and making sure they are safe and not hurt. Showing his love and genuine care for others.

  2. When Augustus plays the video game with Isaac what prevents him from winning is he tries to save the civilians. This shows that Augustus cares about other people even if he doesn't know them and puts others before himself.

When Gus plays the video game with Isaac he continually saves the civilians by sacrificing himself. This, I believe, he does because he cares for others, but also enjoys playing the role of the hero.

  4. When Gus plays the video game with Isaac he loses because he saves the civilians in the game. This shows that he cares for others, but also that he values life over death. This is a great parallel to the book, especially when you think of his friendship/relationship with Hazel. He knows that she is sick, yet values her life over the "impeding death" that looms over her. He is able to look past the flaws in a person and see the good that is worth saving.

  5. Augustus cannot win because he wants to save everybody. This is consistent with his behavior. He is there for Isaac and Hazel. He offers Hazel his wish. Augustus wants to save everyone.

  8. Augustus and Isaac spend a most of their time together playing video games, but they each have different views on “winning.” Isaac gets frustrated with Augustus because every time they end up losing. Augustus always tries to save the civilians knowing that by doing this they will lose. With Augustus, winning is doing anything he can to save the people around him. The fact that he always saves the civilians shows that he truly does care for others more than himself, even if he doesn’t know the person. Augustus knows that Hazel is terminally ill, but he is more worried about making the end of her life better than his own.

  9. I think that what prevents Isaac and Augustus from winning their video game is Augustus feeling like he needs to be more of a hero. He needs to feel like less of a burden on others by going above and beyond to prove his worth. He also felt this way for Hazel, taking her on a trip to Amsterdam, spending his only wish on her. He takes the pain for everyone else so that he no longer causes people to suffer. I’m guessing he has trouble at home with his parents. He must feel that he causes his parents to suffer, so he let’s others walk all over him because he feels like that’s what he has to do. This is no act of kindness out of the bottom of his heart; this is a serious issue that needs to be dealt with. Augustus is a softy; he wants the best for everyone at his own expense.

  10. When Augustus and Isaac are playing the video game they don't win because Augustus wanted to save the civilians and the prisoner. Isaac wanted to win the game and then save the civilians and the prisoner. Augustus likes to be selfless and think about others and ensure their safety before his own. Augustus “wished” to go to Amsterdam for Hazel, and she wouldn't have been able to go without his wish.

  11. He valiantly sacrifices himself for children to buy them a minute, which could be the minute to buy them an hour, which buys days, weeks, months, years. ~Approximate quoting of A.G. This shows that he would do anything for anyone, that he is selfless, and will not stop helping everyone he can.

  13. Augustus always tries to make the "world' a better place rather than racing to the end of the game. He tries to save other characters which takes time and inevitably makes the team lose the game. This shows that Gus's character has compassion and hope. If you think about it, he tries to "save" his friends too. Isaac needs quite a bit of hope as does Hazel. He provides his quirky style of humor as a way of bringing a little light into their lives.

    1. I totally agree about Augustus playing the world rather than the game. It's all about metaphors: if you play the game and walk past people you could save, then it doesn't matter if you beat the game. The game has beaten you. O.O

  14. Augustus saves the civilians at the cost of his and his units lives. Augustus demonstrates a sacrificial character trait when he saves the civilians in the game. He wants to make others happy by doing things like that so it will make them smile or make their day.

    1. That is a good point: Augustus may save the children, but his unit is sacrificed along with himself. In that particular case, it may have been a Hail-Mary attempt to achieve the game's goals, but it doesn't necessarily show that Augustus is conscientious of ALL the people around him.

Augustus sacrificed his life for the children to hopefully give them some time to escape from the bad guys in the game that he and Isaac are playing. This shows that Augustus is a person that thinks about others more than himself. Compassion. He cares about others and what will happen to them more than what happens to himself. He is a caring person and has that type of personality

Augustus loses the video game he plays with Issac because he always wants to save the civilians, even if that means sacrificing his own (video game) life. This shows Augustus values other people above himself and wanted to be a hero.

  18. What prevents Gus from winning the game is that in the game Gus kills himself to save the civilians. This tells us that Gus is a selfless person who cares about others.

  20. Haley J. I think what prevents Augustus from winning the game is finding the prisoner this says that Augustus takes the game too seriously.

  21. Lily H. Augustus doesn't win the video game because he tries to free the prisoner first. I think this shows that Augustus really wants to help people no matter what happens to him.
